Dr. Bernice A. King to Deliver Keynote at Old Dominion University’s MLK Day Ceremony
Norfolk, VA – January 2025 — Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, will deliver the keynote address at Old Dominion University’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observance Ceremony, an event dedicated to honoring the enduring legacy of one of history’s most influential civil rights leaders.
As the youngest child of Dr. King, Dr. Bernice A. King has become a global voice for justice, nonviolence, and spiritual transformation. She currently serves as CEO of The King Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where she carries forward her father’s vision of the “Beloved Community” — a world grounded in justice, equity, and love.
This year’s event at ODU promises to be a powerful gathering of students, educators, community leaders, and changemakers. Dr. King’s address is expected to focus on “Living the Legacy: From Words to Action,” a timely reflection on how today’s generation can activate Dr. King’s message in tangible, transformative ways.
“It is not enough to commemorate my father’s dream,” Dr. King has often said. “We must live the dream. That means confronting injustice, speaking truth to power, and choosing love over fear — again and again.”
ODU’s annual MLK Day ceremony is a cornerstone of the university’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and civic engagement. Dr. King’s presence underscores the event’s importance and offers students a rare opportunity to hear directly from someone who not only shares Dr. King’s bloodline — but his burden and his boldness.
In her keynote, Dr. King is expected to speak to the pressing issues of today — from racial injustice and youth empowerment to leadership, faith, and the power of nonviolent change.
The event will also feature music, student reflections, and the presentation of the university’s MLK Legacy Awards, which honor individuals and organizations demonstrating extraordinary commitment to service and equity.
